What can fairy tales highlight about gender?
“Feminist fairy tales must be stories in which the main character is empowered regardless of gender. In order to do this, more authors should follow Donna Jo Napoli’s lead and re-vision traditional stories by changing narratives conventions, empowering female and male protagonists, and developing narratives that encode truly feminist themes and values” (41)

Unit Plan Two- Gender
Unit 2 Lesson #5
Objective: Students will be able to understand the characteristics of a successful response. To understand the process of constructing an argument. They will practice writing response/constructing arguments in preparation for their Summary and Response Paper.
Rational: To build from last class, students will then learn how to write a strong response for a college essay. This will prepare them to write their essay for Unit 2. I will use a Prezi presentation as an interactive way to engage students during the lecture. I will post this on our class website so that students can access the material as needed.
Materials:
Opening: Last class, we reviewed summary and analysis. Both will be incorporated into the summary and response paper. Today, we will review and expand our understanding of what makes an effective response. This will prepare you for your upcoming paper.
Plan: First, I will give the students a brief writing assignment that will serve as an entrance slip:
Students will share what they wrote. I will then write the characteristics they’ve expressed on the board.
I will then present a prezi presentation that presents information on response and constructing the essays.
Presentation Link: (SEE RESOURCES TAB)
Next, I will have the students practice writing a response and constructing an argument based on what they learned from the presentation.
Class Writing Assignment: Respond the one of the following quotes:
“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten” –Neil Gaiman, Coraline
“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales” –Albert Einstein
“Fear isn’t so difficult to understand. After all, weren’t we all frightened as children? Nothing has changed since Little Red Riding Hood faced the big bad wolf. What frightens us today is exactly the same sort of thing that frightened us yesterday. It’s just a different wolf. This fright complex is rooted in every individual” –Alfred Hitchcock
Conclusion: Today, you have been given resources on how to write an effective response as well as how to construct an argument. These are two skills that not only will help you in this paper and this course, but also other classes.
